Science behind marine parks

The SA Department of Environment and Natural Resources has published a range of fact sheets on the science behind the development of marine parks in South Australia.  The Science Behind Marine Parks tells us how research has been used to build our knowledge about:
  1. What species we have in South Australia
  2. How SA marine ecosystems work
  3. What are the threats to these ecosystems
  4. How marine parks will allow us to manage the environment to ensure biodiversity conservation in the longer term.

This literature review provides summaries of the findings of more than 350 scientific papers about the benefits of marine parks, including increases in species abundance, biomass, size ranges and frequency, mean size increases, and spill-over effects.

Marine protected areas - a plain English blog review from Professor Corey Bradshaw, University of Adelaide looks at nine papers about marine park science.

Our recent post outlining the scope of research that underpins marine parks also makes great reading.
The Partnership for the Interdisciplinary Study of Coastal Oceans (PISCO) has developed some great resources about the science of marine reserves. Find them here.
